St. Augustine Nights of Lights 2025-2026: What You MUST Know Before You Visit

Each holiday season, St. Augustine transforms into one of the most breathtaking holiday destinations in the world during the Nights of Lights celebration. Millions of tiny white lights blanket the historic district, earning recognition from National Geographic as one of the “10 Best Holiday Light Displays in the World.” But here’s the honest truth. This is not a quiet, small-town event you can just stumble into. It is huge, it is busy, the crowds are hectic, and with this year’s changes, you need to plan ahead more than ever.

New for 2025: Shortened Festival Dates

The 2025-2026 Nights of Lights will run from November 15, 2025, to January 11, 2026, a significantly shorter season compared to years past when the lights stayed on through the end of January. What does this mean? Expect even more intense crowds, especially on weekends, as everyone tries to pack their visit into the tighter window. Planning ahead is no longer optional. It’s essential!

If battling traffic, full parking lots, and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds doesn’t sound appealing, consider visiting Nights of Lights on Monday – Wednesday, or follow our pro tips to make the experience smoother.

Book Accommodations Early

The charm of Nights of Lights draws crowds, and accommodations near the historic downtown area fill up quickly. Don’t wait too long to secure your stay. Booking in advance ensures you’ll have a comfortable place to rest after a magical night of lights. A few of our favorite locally owned accommodations are…

St. George Inn: Nestled at the north end of St. George Street, the St. George Inn, owned by the Kass family for two decades, epitomizes historic elegance in the heart of St. Augustine. Boasting a prime location next to the Old City Gates and across from the Castillo de San Marcos, the inn offers an immersive experience in the city’s rich history. Guests can enjoy live music in the enchanting courtyard most days, creating a serene escape within the vibrant atmosphere. Bin 39, the in-house bar, caters to connoisseurs with a fantastic selection of wines, beers, and charcuterie. The Kass family’s steadfast stewardship ensures the St. George Inn remains a beloved cornerstone, inviting visitors to savor the perfect blend of sophistication and laid-back charm in this iconic destination.

St. Francis Inn: Located in the quiet southern historic district, the St. Francis Inn is one of the city’s oldest and most beloved bed & breakfasts. Housed in a building that dates back to 1791, the inn blends centuries of history with warm, family-owned hospitality. Owners Joe and Margaret Finnegan have been welcoming guests here since 1985, with their son Patrick now helping manage day-to-day operations, ensuring every stay feels like home. The lush, tropical courtyard is a true hidden gem—shaded by towering banana trees, vibrant bougainvillea, and colorful flowers, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the complimentary homemade breakfast each morning or unwind during the inn’s popular evening social hour. In cooler months, guests cozy up around the courtyard’s gas fire pit to make Inn s’mores, a guest favorite after exploring Nights of Lights. Just steps from the courtyard, the temperature-controlled swimming pool offers a private, year-round retreat away from the crowds. With cozy, well-appointed rooms, free daily breakfast, and an unbeatable location within walking distance of the lights, the St. Francis Inn is an ideal choice for those looking to enjoy St. Augustine’s magic without the parking stress.

Avoid the Weekend Madness: If you’re local or live nearby in Florida, target Monday through Wednesday for your visit. Crowds are lighter, parking is easier, and you’ll still experience the magic of the lights. January also gives you some reprieve as most tourists will be leaving town on New Year’s Day to go home after the holiday.

For overnight visitors with schedule flexibility, arrive Sunday evening and check out by Thursday morning. This helps you dodge the chaotic Friday-Saturday surge and lets you explore at a more leisurely pace.

Plan Your Arrival and Parking: If you’re not staying within walking distance of downtown, plan to arrive early to secure parking. Arriving while it’s still light allows you to find a spot easily and gives you time to explore the city before the lights come on. Avoid the chaos by arriving before 2 PM (Noon on weekends) to ensure a stress-free parking experience. Click here to find a full list of parking options downtown.

Consider Alternative Transportation: For those staying on Anastasia Island or the mainland, consider taking an Uber downtown. This eliminates the hassle of searching for parking and lets you focus on enjoying the festivities stress-free.

Experience the Lights by Boat: While walking through the illuminated streets is magical, the best view of the Nights of Lights is from the water. These boat tours begin booking 4 to 5 months in advance, so don’t delay in reserving your spot.

If You Hate Crowds, Reconsider

We love our city, and Nights of Lights is a magical tradition—but it’s not for everyone, especially with this year’s shorter season and ongoing city construction. If you dislike heavy traffic, packed sidewalks, and tight parking, it may be worth postponing your trip until you can plan ahead properly, or waiting for a future year when the festival runs longer.

If you’re coming this year, plan early, arrive prepared, and make reservations across the board. St. Augustine Experiences is here to help make your Nights of Lights visit unforgettable. Just make sure you’re ready for the crowds!
